As part of our School of Coding series, engineering workshops for schools at Condover Hall Activity Centre see students face the hands-on and engaging side of coding, robotics, and drones.

Tailored to both primary and secondary school age ranges, engineering workshops can slot seamlessly into your JCA activity programme.

What to expect

Depending on the size and number of groups you wish to enrol into the engineering workshops, sessions can run either simultaneously or rotationally alongside Condover Hall’s many adventure activities.

  • Workshops last 3 hours 15 mins (15-minute break included)
  • Explanation of the types of engineering
  • Introduction to coding
  • Interacting with Edison robots/drones
  • Problem-solving with coding software (Crumble / Python)

Engineering Workshops for Primary Schools

The engineering workshops for primary schools present an immersive hands-on experience in coding, robotics, and drones.

The School of Coding team focus on nurturing essential engineering skills like computational thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Starting with assembling police lights using Crumble software, LED lights, wires, battery packs, and buttons, students soon dive into the thrilling world of coding to create flashing red and blue lights with just a press of a button.

Extension tasks are available for students who demonstrate sound knowledge and skill. These can include adding a moving wheel to their circuit and programming it to spin.

The engineering workshop will continue to uncover the exciting opportunities of coding Edison robots to manoeuvre shapes, and adjust direction, speed and distance using sound cues like clapping.

Through creative problem-solving and hands-on experimentation, students use block-based coding to expertly guide their Edison robot around shapes set by the School of Coding team.

Engineering Workshops for Secondary Schools

For secondary schools, the engineering workshops provide a fun and engaging exploration of coding, robotics, and drones.

The School of Coding helps students develop essential engineering skills like problem-solving and teamwork.

In the first part of the workshop, students dive into the mechanics of drones, connecting physics and engineering concepts. This also includes a look to the real-world uses of drones across different industries.

Students are then taught how to code drones using block-based programming, guiding them through each stage of the coding process.

Students will have the chance to code their drones to navigate through an exciting obstacle course. Through a test-and-learn approach, students will also learn to program Edison robots to tackle a challenging race track, enhancing their problem-solving abilities with Python (text-based) coding.
