Engineering workshops at Condover Hall
Part of our School of Coding series, engineering workshops at Condover Hall bring coding, robotics and drones together in one hands-on, high-energy session. Designed for both primary and secondary learners, these workshops slot seamlessly into your JCA residential and balance perfectly with your outdoor adventure activities.
Learners get stuck into real engineering challenges while building problem-solving skills, teamwork and confidence — all supported by our brilliant School of Coding tutors.
Engineering workshops for primary schools
Our primary engineering workshop is packed with practical, fun and accessible tech.
Students begin by assembling police lights using Crumble software, LED lights, wires and battery packs. They’ll code flashing red and blue lights — all triggered by a button they’ve wired themselves.
Extension tasks (for speedy engineers!) include adding a motorised wheel to the circuit and coding it to spin.
Next, pupils take on Edison robots, learning to adjust direction, distance and speed using sound cues like clapping. Using block-based coding, they guide their robot around shapes set by the School of Coding tutors.
It’s playful, creative and brilliant for developing confidence and computational thinking.
Engineering workshops for secondary schools
Our secondary engineering workshop gives older students a deeper dive into drones, robotics and engineering-led problem-solving.
Students begin by exploring the mechanics of drones, linking physics and engineering to real-world applications — from filming and surveying to emergency services and environmental monitoring.
They then learn to code drones using block-based programming, controlling each stage of movement.
To stretch more advanced learners, the workshop introduces Python-based coding for guiding Edison robots around a challenging race track — a brilliant test of logic, accuracy and persistence.
This is engineering at its most hands-on: experiment, test, adjust, succeed.
What to expect
Engineering workshops can run simultaneously or in rotation, depending on your group size. Each session lasts 3 hours and 15 minutes, including a short break.
Students will explore:
- Different branches of engineering
- An introduction to coding
- Hands-on robotics using Edison robots and drones
- Problem-solving using Crumble and Python coding software
