So, you’re thinking about booking a JCA school residential for 2026? Bravo! Give yourself a high five, a biscuit, and maybe a quiet cup of tea (before the kids find you). Taking your pupils away on a JCA adventure is one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do as a teacher or Group Leader. It’s where confidence grows, friendships blossom, and memories stick for life.
But… booking a residential can feel a bit like herding squirrels. Fear not! We’ve pulled together five golden nuggets to help you get ahead. Think of this as your trusty compass – a little muddy, a little loud, but pointing you in the right direction.

1. Book Early – Like, Really Early
2026 might sound miles away, but trust us, the best dates disappear quicker than the last custard cream in the staffroom. It also means you can spread payments and give parents plenty of notice.
Early booking = more choice of dates, activities and room layouts.
“We’ve been coming to Condover for over 10 years and we always have a fab time. The children learn so many new skills and build good relationships with their instructors. We look forward to returning next year.”

2. Know Your Group’s Goals
Every school is different. Is your aim team-building? Confidence? Or maybe even burning off enough energy to focus on studies (JCA do Revision Residentials too!)?
- Write down your top 3 priorities for the trip.
- Share these with us so our JCA team can tailor activities.
“The children smashed down barriers and overcame fears whilst in a safe environment. They had new experiences that they couldn’t have had anywhere else. The staff were friendly and welcoming and ALL went the extra mile. If you want your pupils to have the experience of a lifetime with all the paperwork stress taken out of booking, this is the place for you.”

3. Ask About Safety (and Ask Again)
JCA school residentials are about adventure, but they’re also about trust. You need to know your pupils are in safe hands.
Look out for accreditations like the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge or membership of BAPA (Spoiler: JCA hold both).
Ask if staff are DBS-checked and first aid trained. JCA instructors undergo training so Group Leaders are not only reassured we have the right people in place to lead pupils through their adventure but are capable to face and deal with anything that’s thrown at them (and that includes buckets of water!).
Don’t be shy – any good activity centre will be proud to tell you.
“Excellent management and safeguarding procedures were brilliant. JCA were very support and swift to respond to any questions or issues throughout our stay. Food was very good and the kids loved the activities. The site is well laid out and accommodation blocks are well set up to best support our students.”

4. Involve Parents Early
Parents want to know: where will my child sleep, what will they eat, and will they be safe?
Most suitable solution to this includes:
- Holding an info evening or Q&A session (in person or online).
- Share packing lists and sample menus well in advance.
- Bonus tip: remind parents that one spare sock is never enough.

5. Keep the Fun in Focus
Yes, logistics matter. Yes, risk assessments are essential. But don’t lose sight of the joy.
At JCA, our activity centres are packed full of energy and life. Make sure you pick a provider whose centre is not just a timetable.
“I would definitely recommend for year 6 children – an amazing experience that they will never forget! Some of the children wanted to stay and do more! The children’s comments – the sailing was the most fun! The instructors were really friendly and nice. The accommodation was lovely and clean. Abseiling was fun! Crate stacking was fun!”

Ask about campfires; where instructors will bring life to the group with silly songs, and what unforgettable “wow” moments are in store. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about climbing walls and canoeing. It’s about a child who’s never been away from home before coming back taller in spirit (and muddier in socks).
Booking a residential is a big step – but with the right prep, it’s a smooth one. Start early, ask the right questions, and keep the joy in sight. Then sit back and watch your pupils shine.
