Always looking to provide children with fresh opportunities to engage with the outdoors through adventure activities, JCA is pleased to present a new centre for 2017!

Peak location, prime learningMount Cook Adventure Centre will be joining the JCA family for our 2017 programme presenting schools with a brand new centre on the outskirts of the Peak District. The idyllic location provides groups with a modern centre designed to emphasise its position overlooking some of the UK’s finest landscape. With panoramic views from the centre’s rooftop terrace and picture-perfect scenes through the valley to Matlock and Carsington Water, Mount Cook’s position next to The National Stone Centre takes full advantage of its surroundings.

Design meets nature

Making the most of the hilltop location in Middleton-by-Wirksworth, the Mount Cook adventure centre has been designed with the surrounding wilderness and eco-friendly ethos in mind. Allowing children to build environmental awareness and appreciation for the natural habitats that surround the centre, Mount Cook successfully bridges the gap between indoor comforts and the great outdoors.

The centrepiece to the main building lies with the glass facade that welcomes groups to Mount Cook. Ascending to a rooftop terrace, children can get a real sense of the scale of the nearby woodlands and national park from the reception and restaurant. The centre makes the most of its surroundings by utilising the quarry as a landing area for the zip wire and mapping out a path for explorer activities in the local woodland.

Providing learning outdoors

Developing the new Mount Cook Adventure Centre sees a vision comes to fruition. Recognising the benefits of outdoor learning has seen designs for the facilities and activity programmes consider how children interact with the setting they are placed in.

Faced with a new learning environment, children are encouraged to take on fresh challenges. The centre focuses on inspiring and motivating children through specialist outdoor activities and the bond established through encouragement, support, and co-operation with their peers. Courage and determination to succeed will see Group Leaders identify personal development goals soon achieved.

A new sense of adventure

Adventure is at the pinnacle of Mount Cook’s activity programme. With a belief in not only developing activity-specific skills, the programmes available to JCA groups allow children to develop key social skills and self-confidence. From zip-lining into the wilderness, traversing obstacles through the sensory trail and cascading the walls through climbing and abseiling activities to learning bushcraft skills and taking to Carsington Water for canoeing, Mount Cook presents activities that can be chosen and differentiated.
